SDG INNOVATION AWARD

With the SDG Innovation Award, flagship projects are honored that make the Sustainable Development Goals the core of their actions and are outstandingly committed to sustainable development The holistic perspective on the SDGs as a target system is relevant here: sustainable development means the simultaneous realization and implementation of environmental and climate protection, as well as development, as parallel core concerns. These concerns are reflected in the 17 sustainability goals of the 2030 Agenda. Emphasis is placed on projects and initiatives that focus on the Global South.

Companies, educational institutions, organizations, initiatives, projects, cities, districts, and municipalities can be awarded.

Applications for the SDG Innovation Award 2024 can be submitted in three categories: “Companies”, “Cities, Municipalities and Districts” and “Youth and Education”.

Companies are a source of innovation for technological solutions that contribute significantly to sustainable development. Through a clear focus on the SDGs, companies can make a decisive contribution through the following effective levers: climate and environmental protection, sustainable production and supply chains, energy-efficient infrastructure, fair working conditions, ethical and responsible business practices, equal rights, and diversity. It is important to note that the interrelationships between industry, innovation, and infrastructure are close – therefore exemplifying the large innovation potential of industry. Companies develop and implement technological solutions for sustainable development and SDGs such as resource and energy efficiency, low-carbon production, circular economy, and climate protection measures. Companies are invited to apply if they have a significant and innovative contribution to sustainable industrial development and promote sustainable production and sustainable supply chains at the core of their business.

As administrative units, cities, municipalities, and counties assume responsibility for businesses and people. Sustainability begins in the communities. The SDGs can be found here as a compass that serves as a strategic orientation. It is important to maintain, promote, and develop cities, municipalities, and districts as attractive locations in the future. Sustainable urban development can help reduce the need for natural resources, focus on resource conservation, and create a better quality of life. Sustainable and livable cities are characterized by future viability, mobility, health, infrastructure, and participation. “Future Cities” are inclusive, safe, resilient, sustainable, and centers of development. Efficient use of space, low raw material and energy consumption, conservation of resources, climate protection measures, and thus, a reduction in environmental pollution are levers for sustainable urban development.

Young people are the future. Their ideas and passion drive change. Children and young people develop creative ideas, find innovative solutions for current challenges, and raise awareness for a sustainable future. (Educational) initiatives, projects, and organizations contribute significantly to the realization of the SDGs: We are looking for projects that enable young people to actively participate in shaping a sustainable future. The initiatives cover a wide range of areas, such as environmental protection, climate change, social justice, health, and education. Important criteria are the transfer of knowledge and skills, the promotion of awareness and a sense of responsibility, and the active participation of young people in concrete measures to achieve the SDGs. The prize is awarded to projects that impress with their innovative character, sustainable impact, and serve as inspiration for others. Applications are open to schools, universities, youth organizations, educational initiatives, sponsors, and other stakeholders who are particularly committed to the goals of the 2030 Agenda and promote several sustainability goals at the same time.
